On April 4, 2008, Noam Chomsky gave the keynote address for the 11th annual MIT Sloan School conference on Latin America. I combined the four videos together to make one.  I gave the sound a thorough restoration: digital noise reduction to remove a loud hum/hiss that ran throughout the program; EQed it to remove excess bass, and went over the sound second by second to reduce or eliminate every audio flub I could (clicks, pops, loud coughs, etc.)  Altogether about a 20 hour job, but worth it.  Alas, many of the errant sounds occured in the midst of Noam's words, so I just did the best I could with that. Noam Chomsky gave this talk on December 10th, 1993, on the board subject of US foreign policy. A portion of this talk was released as a compact disc, entitled "The Clinton Vision" Chomsky begins speaking at 10 minutes into the recording. Chomsky appeared on television the same day to take questions (q.v.).

Noam Chomsky took questions from a live audience in Vancouver, BC, on Sunday March 3, 1996, sponsored by the BC Federation of Labour and the Vancouver and District Labour Council. Chomsky arrived later than scheduled, and thus launched into questions and answers with the audience immediately. Originally broadcast by WorkingTV, the source is a series of nine very low resolution (like 160x120) Real video, or possibly wmv, files. The audio is likewise, very low res. I ran it through some treatments, de-noising and EQing to take out the hiss, and also much of the harshness inherent in very low bitrate audio, but this one is never going to sound good unless a better master emerges.

On May 6, 1996, Noam Chomsky spoke on the subject of Bringing the Third World Home in Springfield, MA. Questions and answers follow the talk. The source video was low bit and 360p, but a lot better than nothing! Using digital noise reduction, I removed almost all the noise, however there is a touch of artifacting in the later half. As is usual, I went through it second by second to reduce or eliminate most of the various errant noises. For the video, I was unable to do much, just some slight color correction. Noam begins speaking at 35:31 in, but Michael Albert's presentation is certainly worth listening to. On March 16, 2009, Noam Chomsky along with a panel of others, including Michael Albert, gave a presentation on Participatory Economics. Although Uncle Noam mentions that there would be a Q&A session, it seems not to have been saved, if it was even ever recorded, alas. The source file is a good quality variable bit MP3 that I've had on various hard drives since 2009. Alas, it is not a direct mic feed, but recorded from the audience, probably near the stage. Michael Albert's portion (the first half), suffered from clipping. There was a grinding/hissing sound that ran throughout which I greatly reduced with digital noise reduction, and EQing to eliminate a low frequency rumble. Altogether, increasing the dynamic range to over 40 decibels, which for an audience recording is pretty good. I also went over the sound second by second to reduce or remove various sound flubs (coughs, clicks, pops, etc.).

This is the first of nine talks. Noam's voice was quite hoarse, as he apparently was recovering from a bad cold. I de-noised and EQed the sound, with middling results, as you can hear. I stripped away an onslaught of audio noise and distortion. I was limited by the original recording, alas. For the video, I applied a bit of color-correction. It seems to have been a VHS camcorder that it was shot with, and the tape it was transferred from was quite old. Even still, it's a decent improvement. And we can thank our lucky stars that it was recorded at all.

On April 30, 2005, Noam Chomsky, along with Ngo Vinh Long, gave a presentation on the 30th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. I removed a persistent hiss with digital noise reduction, leveled out the sound, and EQed it. The 2nd half the of the video, alas, has much poorer sound quality - it was not recorded with a direct mic feed, but with a microphone placed near a sound system speaker - by EQing it, I was able to make the voices somewhat clearer, but hopefully a better master will emerge.

Avram Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, cognitive scientist, logician, historian, political critic and activist. Chomsky is an Institute Professor and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT where he has worked for over fifty years. Chomsky has been described as the father of modern linguistics and a major figure of analytic philosophy. His work has influenced fields such as political science, programming language theory and psychology. Chomsky developed the cognitive development theory. Attention to this theory has increased dramatically since the middle of the twentieth century. In explaining his theory, Chomsky states that while some mental processes are measurable, it is virtually impossible to adequately establish what determines how an individual perceives, remembers, thinks, or solves problems. Thus, cognitive psychology concerns itself with how people perceive, understand, evaluate and think about their behaviors and thoughts. This article will give brief explanations of Chomsky's theoretical beliefs feeding into his Cognitive Development Theory focusing jointly on the areas of psycholinguistics and language acquisition.

Noam Chomsky exposes U.S./British propaganda on China during an interview on the Piers Morgan show. Chomsky argued that the U.S. is escalating the China-Taiwan situation. "Suppose it was true that Iran is helping insurgents in Iraq. I mean, wasn't the United States helping insurgents when the Russians invaded Afghanistan? Did we think there was anything wrong with that? I mean, Iraq's a country that was invaded and is under military occupation. You can't have a serious discussion about whether someone else is interfering in it. The basic assumption underlying the discussion is that we own the world." And, furthermore, there happens to be an obligation of the states in the Security Council and elsewhere to move towards establishing a nuclear weapons-free zone in the region. Now that would include Iran and Israel and any U.S. forces deployed there. That's part of Resolution 687. Now to your question. The real reasons for the attack on Iran, the sanctions, and so on go back into history. I mean, we like to forget the history; Iranians don't. In 1953, the United States and Britain overthrew the parliamentary government and installed a brutal dictator, the Shah, who ruled until 1979. And during his rule, incidentally, the United States was strongly supporting the same programs they're objecting to today. In 1979, the population overthrew the dictator, and since then the United States has been essentially torturing Iran. First it tried a military coup. Then it supported Saddam Hussein during Iraq's invasion of Iran, which killed hundreds of thousands of people. Then, after that was over, the United States started imposing harsh sanctions on Iran. And now it's escalating that. The point is: Iran is out of control. You know, it's supposed to be a U.S.-client state, as it was under the Shah, and it's refusing to play that role. Just a couple of years ago, from 2004 through 2006, Iran did agree to suspend all uranium enrichment, halt even what everyone agrees they're legally entitled to. That was an agreement with the European Union. They agreed to suspend all uranium enrichment. And in return, the European Union was to provide what were called full guarantees on security issues—that means getting the United States to call off its threats to attack and destroy Iran. Well, the European Union didn't live up to its obligation, [as] they couldn't get the U.S. to stop it. So the Iranians then also pulled out and began to return to uranium enrichment. The way that's described here is-- the Iranians broke the agreement.

And now it's escalating that. The point is: Iran is out of control. You know, it's supposed to be a U.S.-client state, as it was under the Shah, and it's refusing to play that role. Just a couple of years ago, from 2004 through 2006, Iran did agree to suspend all uranium enrichment, halt even what everyone agrees they're legally entitled to. That was an agreement with the European Union. They agreed to suspend all uranium enrichment. And in return, the European Union was to provide what were called full guarantees on security issues—that means getting the United States to call off its threats to attack and destroy Iran. Well, the European Union didn't live up to its obligation, [as] they couldn't get the U.S. to stop it. So the Iranians then also pulled out and began to return to uranium enrichment. The way that's described here is-- the Iranians broke the agreement.

Charlotte Turner Smith (1749 – 1806) was an English poet and novelist. She initiated a revival of the English sonnet, helped establish the conventions of Gothic fiction, and wrote political novels of sensibility.<br /><br />It was in 1784, in debtor's prison with her husband Benjamin, that she wrote and published her first work, Elegiac Sonnets. The work achieved instant success, allowing Charlotte to pay for their release from prison. Smith's sonnets helped initiate a revival of the form and granted an aura of respectability to her later novels.<br /><br />Stuart Curran, the editor of Smith's poems, has written that Smith is "the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic". She helped shape the "patterns of thought and conventions of style" for the period. Romantic poet William Wordsworth was the most affected by her works. He said of Smith in the 1830s that she was "a lady to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered". By the second half of the nineteenth century, however, Smith was largely forgotten.

Captain John Smith (c. January 1580 – June 21, 1631) Admiral of New England was an English soldier, explorer, and author. He was knighted for his services to Sigismund Bathory, Prince of Transylvania. He is remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with the Virginia Indian girl Pocahontas during an altercation with the Powhatan Confederacy and her father, Chief Powhatan. He was a leader of the Virginia Colony (based at Jamestown) between September 1608 and August 1609, and led an exploration along the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay.<br /><br />His books and maps may have been as important as his deeds, as they encouraged more Englishmen and women to follow the trail he had blazed and to colonize the New World. He gave the name New England to that region, and encouraged people with the comment, "Here every man may be master and owner of his owne labour and land...If he have nothing but his hands, he may...by industrie quickly grow rich."<br /><br />In 1614, Smith returned to the Americas in a voyage to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay. He named the region "New England". He made two attempts in 1614 and 1615 to return to the same coast. First a storm dismasted his ship. In the second attempt, he was captured by French pirates off the Azores. Smith escaped after weeks of captivity and made his way back to England, where he published an account of his two voyages as A Description of New England. He never left England again. 20Triplanetary, First in the Lensman Series

Triplanetary was first serialized in Amazing Stories in 1934. After the Lensman series became popular, Smith took his Triplanetary story and turned it into the first of the Lensman series, using it as a prequel to give the back story for the protaganists in the Lensmen series. He added 6 new chapters, doubling it in size and it's really a different book from the serialized novel, being published 14 years after the first. It was put into Gutenberg just last year.<br /><br /> The novel covers several episodes in an eons-long eugenics project of the super-intelligences of the Arisia. This alien race is breeding two genetic lines to become the ultimate weapon in Arisia's cosmic war with their arch enemy, the Eddore. The initial chapters cover the Kinnison genetic line during the fall of Atlantis and Nero's (Gharlane of Eddore) reign in Rome. These tales were inserted into the novel following the serialized release, along with chapters covering members of the Kinnison line in World Wars One, Two and Three. The final chapter of Triplanetary tells of the discovery of the inertialess drive that allows faster than light travel. Patrolman Conway Costigan and his friends engage in a space battle with Gray Roger the pirate gangster. This conflict is complicated by the arrival of the technologically superior, extra-Solar, amphibian-like Nevians, resulting in the first interstellar war involving humans. In this story Virgil Samms and Roderick Kinnison, two very important members of the eugenics project, are introduced. They will play the leading roles in the next story, First Lensman. Starfish, the many types of crabs, shrimp, sea weed and finally something called the Precious Wentletrap which I will allow your imagination to think about for a while. His writing is clear and, as always, easy to read. Note that these are presented as educational 'lessons' on the various animals found near the sea and each lesson or chapter ends with a few questions called 'Exercises' which the student is asked to see if the main points of the chapter are retained.
