The purpose of this research project, titled "Artificial Intelligence-Powered Robots and Machines in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: A Scoping Review," is to explore and compile existing evidence on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into robotic and machine-based cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This field is relatively under-researched, and there is limited understanding of how AI-powered devices in CPR compare to traditional human-led CPR in terms of effectiveness, patient outcomes, and overall performance. Given the rapidly advancing technology in healthcare, particularly in the domain of AI, it is crucial to assess the current state of evidence to inform future clinical practices and technological innovations in resuscitation protocols. This scoping review will be conducted following the guidelines and standards from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual for Evidence Synthesis, Chapter 11: Scoping Reviews, and will be reported according to PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews. To ensure a thorough search and selection process, I have collaborated with an expert librarian at the University of Illinois Chicago in Peoria to develop a robust search strategy. The review will include a detailed search across major databases and trial registries to ensure comprehensive coverage of the available literature. Evidence will be screened and extracted using Covidence software, with two independent reviewers ensuring accurate selection and extraction based on predefined criteria. In cases of discrepancies, a third reviewer will be consulted to reach a consensus. The extracted data will be synthesized and presented in tables for easy comparison. The quality of the evidence will be assessed using GRADE software, which will allow us to evaluate the strength of the evidence and categorize it accordingly. Given the nature of the data and the current lack of consensus, we will conduct a narrative synthesis of the findings. This will involve summarizing key results from the included studies and offering a detailed assessment of what the evidence suggests about AI-powered devices in CPR. We aim to highlight both the progress made in this area and the existing gaps in knowledge, with the goal of providing a clearer picture of the potential role these technologies could play in improving CPR practices and patient outcomes in the future. Through this scoping review, we hope to contribute to the understanding of AI in CPR, providing insights into its current applications, challenges, and opportunities for further research. The ultimate objective is to determine the extent to which AI-powered robots and machines can enhance cardiopulmonary resuscitation and whether they can offer comparable or superior outcomes compared to traditional manual CPR.
