Canada has a rapidly aging population which means that age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia are on the rise. Because of this, studies such as the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) have been collecting data on memory, lifestyle and executive function for many years (Raina et al., 2009). The neuropsychological assessment tool used to evaluate memory in the CLSA is the Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) (Schmidt, 1996). However, since there is a large number of participants in the CLSA database, a modified version of the RAVLT was used in the majority in the data collection. In order to evaluate the CLSA, the modified data collection methods must be replicated. By comparing the CLSA methods which implemented a five-minute delay to the normed twenty-minute delay this study aims to uncover how the length of delay between reading the word list and recalling them has an effect on the number of correct words recalled on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). RAVLT scores collected from Canadians ages 20-45 with a five-minute delay will be compared to the existing RAVLT normative data using a one-sample t-test. The normed twenty-minute delay and the raw data of the five-minute delay will be compared to determine whether differences exist between delay times.

Pre-registration of hypothesis that people living in areas with high indices of multiple deprivation are more impulsive than people living in areas with low indices of multiple deprivation. In short poverty is an environmental antecedent of impulsive choice behaviour after controlling for other known correlates of impulsivity. The data is drawn from Wave 5 of the English Longitudinal Study on Ageing.

Previous research has demonstrated a close connection between the experience of stress – defined as the perception of a situation as threatening and the simultaneous belief not having enough resources to manage the situation (Folkman, 2013) – and epigenetic modifications. These epigenetic modifications can contribute to the pathophysiology of psychological disorders or other stress-related characteristics (e.g., Yuan et al., 2023). Specific epigenetic modification processes were found to be associated with aging This so-called epigenetic aging is evident in developmental contexts and reflects not only genetically driven maturation but also how environmental factors, particularly early life stressors, can influence the pace of aging (Gems et al., 2024). Individuals can be exposed to significant stressors, such as violence, poor nutrition, or adverse life experiences like school pressure which can impact their maturation pace in response to these perceived challenges (Ellis & Del Giudice, 2019; Kuzawa & Bragg, 2012). As a result, accelerated epigenetic aging can be linked to high stress levels (Mak et al., 2023). Since epigenetic aging is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors and individuals show differences in the genetic sensitivity to stress (Kendler et al., 1995), it is important to consider the genetic contribution to the associations between stress and epigenetic aging (Boyce et al., 2020). As previous research suggests impact of stress on epigenetic aging, we investigate the associations between different measures of epigenetic aging and various stress-related characteristics and experiences within an exploratory study. This investigation will utilize data from the German TwinLife study and its associated TwinLife Epigenetic Change Satellite (TECS) project (Hahn et al., 2016; Mönkediek et al., 2019; Rohm et al., 2023). The twin design allows us to consider the genetic contributions.

Work-related stress is known to alter biological pathways and to be associated with cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, such stress-related conditions as well as occupational characteristics can lead to epigenetic age acceleration (EAA), calculated from epigenetic clocks serving as a biological proxy for age. Moreover, second-generation clocks are regarded as risk estimators for both morbidity and mortality factors, while epigenetic age acceleration has been associated with mental disorders like depression. In the current study, we investigate the mediating role of epigenetic aging parameters in the form of DNA methylation based epigenetic aging and age acceleration / deceleration from first and second generation clocks (DNAm Age "Skin & Blood"; DNAm PhenoAge, DNAm GrimAge 1 and DNAm GrimAge 2) on the relationship between subjective or objective stress markers and burnout or depressive symptoms. The current research should help to understand alterations in molecular mechanisms due to stress and its effect on mental health related outcomes.

Autistic adults are more vulnerable to a range pf psychological problems (Kanne, Christ & Reiersen, 2009). This significantly affects their QoL. While there are studies exploring QoL of adolescents with ASD (Shipman et al., 2011; Skaletski et al., 2021), there is a dearth of research exploring this association in older autistic adults. Evidently there is a need to address this lack of research in midlife and older age, not only for the purposes of social care and employment but also to explore the range and impact of these psychological problems on the QoL of older autistic individuals. Currently, there is no study exploring this association. Considering this gap in literature, this project aims to explore the total number of mental health conditions and its impact on QoL of older autistic individuals. The participants are from the Age Well Autism Cohort- a study undertaken to understand the effects of ageing and QoL on older autistic and non-autistic individuals. A secondary data analysis will be undertaken based on already collected data. It includes self-report measures and questionnaire administered to: 1. Autistic older adults (ASD) 2. Adults who identify as autistic (self-identifiers) and 3. Non-autistic adults (Non-ASD)

The objective of this systematic review is to assess whether the use of nutritional supplements may be associated with the improvement of skin quality in postmenopausal women.

Reinstating contextual details from an event—or context reinstatement—often aids memory retrieval, but recent work from our lab has revealed that it can also systemically distort memory (Doss et al., 2018; 2020). We have found that presenting younger adult participants with the same context (e.g., background scenes) during encoding and retrieval not only boosted memory for studied objects (hit rates), but also boosted false recognition of similar objects that were not studied (false alarms). For example, participants are more likely to claim that they saw a cat on a beach if they had previously seen a similar cat on the same beach, as opposed to a different background (e.g., a forest). This context illusion is associated with high-confidence and is impervious to explicit warnings at retrieval. While these results establish the reliability of the context illusion in younger adults, the extent that this illusion is impacted by aging is poorly understood. This is an important question, given that context reinstatement has been suggested as a useful way to overcome memory decline with aging. Thus, the extent that context can distort memory in younger and older adults, and individual differences in this effect, are critical to investigate. The present research aims to address these gaps in our understanding by (1) comparing the size of the context illusion between younger and older adults, and by (2) investigating the possible role of executive (or frontal) functioning in driving context illusion effects. We propose two competing hypotheses about the underlying mechanisms driving the context illusion, and they make different predictions for aging effects. According to the explicit familiarity hypothesis, during the memory test, representing objects (or similar objects) on the same background context triggers the explicit retrieval of previous associations between the object and the scene which make the object feel more familiar. This familiarity would increase hit rates to studied objects as well as false alarm rates to similar (but nonstudied) objects. If the context illusion were driven by such explicit feelings of familiarity, then we would expect the illusion to be exacerbated by aging. This effect would be analogous to age-related increases in memory errors on other kinds of memory tasks, such as tasks that increase errors by presenting items that are semantically or perceptually associated with to-be-rejected items (Butler et al., 2004), or by presenting the to-be-rejected items in a nontarget source (Davidson & Glisky, 2002). Each of those studies found that increased memory errors in older adults were primarily driven by those with relatively poor executive or “frontal lobe” functions, ostensibly because these individuals are less likely to use cognitively-controlled monitoring processes that can help to avoid memory errors based on feelings of familiarity or other forms of misinformation in these kinds of tasks. By contrast, according to the implicit fluency hypothesis, presenting objects (or similar objects) on the same background during study and test does not trigger an explicit sense of familiarity that needs to be monitored at test. Instead, test items presented on reinstated contexts are processed more fluently than those on switched contexts, and this processing fluency triggers a nonconscious or automatic attribution process whereby the object itself elicits a sense of oldness or recollection. This is a critical distinction, because unlike an explicit mechanism, an implicit mechanism would imply that the context illusion is relatively immune to conscious attempts to monitor memory and evade its effect. Thus, unlike aging effects on memory illusions that are driven by familiarity and deficient monitoring processes, we would not expect to see age differences in the size of the context illusion. Indeed, there is evidence that aging does not increase susceptibility to other kinds of fluency effects (Thapar & Westerman, 2009), analogous to age-related sparing of implicit memory processes (La Voie & Light, 1994). To investigate these questions, we will conduct a study comparing younger and older adults on the context illusion task modeled after Doss et al. (2018). Our primary comparison will be the size of the context illusion between the age groups, including controls for age differences in item-context binding that could impact susceptibility to the context illusion. For each age group, we also will recruit individuals that score high or low on a battery of executive (or frontal-lobe) function tasks, to disentangle the contributions of aging from those of executive function. Finally, we will administer a version of the DRM task that, based on prior work described above (e.g., Butler et al., 2004), should vary as a function of age and executive function and therefore serve as a meaningful comparison to our context illusion task.
